Young Liars is Pulp Fiction meets any Teen movie and Memento. It's just plain fucked up. In a really good way.

Now I was always a fan of Stray Bullets (please Mr Lapham will you finish it!), his independently produced series, that was harsh, nasty, and very, very smart. That series began around the time of Pulp Fiction, and was similarly on the avant garde end of chopping narration chronology up to mess with your head, create suspense, and generally achieve effects that normal main-stream comics can't. So being a fan, helped me be ready for how this story just begins to get more and more and more messed up.

I don't want to give much away - all I shall say is that this first volume of the series is mostly dark in its thematic contents, leaving a lot of the cut-up chronology to occur in later volumes. That's ok, as otherwise nobody would finish this excellent beginning chapter on what life can (or is it 'wants to') be like.

Like those few excellent creators out there who are both writer and artist for the same title, Lapham has a unified vision, where both writing and artistic aspects work together to achieve more, where normal comics often have one aspect of lesser quality, or subserviant to the others stronger nature.

A strong move by El Capitan into mainstream comics, without sacrificing any of his harsh and wonderful world view. Stay strapped in children, it's a dark ride, and one you'll be glad you took.
