Picture of luciferpicissue5 Lucifer comes into his/its own, in this second volume. Partly because series-life-artist Peter Gross comes on board, giving a crisper, more mythic feel to the series, but mostly because Carey grew into the series properly at this point, with excellent scripting, arcing and individual stories. What became an almost trademark story development, of Lucifer out-smarting by sidestepping involvement, and reposting with a nastiness and intelligence that Sandman missed, is seen fully for the first time in these pages.
A must-read for Vertigo fans, a classic for Carey fans, and even a great volume to read and study for those interested in seeing the patterns of how to pace, write dialogue, and develop storylines.
Plus, quite simply great fun, very cool, especially with Carey's now known love of Japanese mythology, interweaving it wonderfully with Western mythic structures, without it seeming cobbled together or unusual. A true, great piece.
